Arrangements of food in bowls and on plates is a favourite theme. Kirsten collects antique plates and bowls and the story of the moment is captured in the arrangement. It may be where the fruit was found or picked or served in a restaurant.. each piece has its own story.

These chillies were two amongst ten thousand.. on a mad avalanche-style market stall in Barcelona. Hand-picked for their perfect shape and colour these two were the chosen ones.. and whats more they tasted sensational!

The name "pomegranate" derives from Latin pomum ("apple") and granatus ("seeded"). There is much mythology and symbolism surrounding the fruit, which is often seen as a symol offertility and promise. In Greek mythology the seasons are attributed to Persephone eating four of the seeds whilst was being held in the underworld by Hades, god of the underworld. Many artists have depicted the pomegranate, including Sandro Botticelli , Leonardo Da Vinci and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
The pomegranate fruit was also an emblem in the coat of arms of Catherine of Aragon (1485 - 1536). She was King Henry VIII's first wife. However, when Queen Catherine didn't produce a male heir, His Majesty settled on Anne Boleyn. With a new queen ensconced in the Palace, her first decree was a new coat of arms, showing a white falcon pecking at a pomegranate.
However, my reasons for painting the fruit is essentially that Pomegranates are such a fabulous fruit, deep red and full of little bursts of flavour. I have been lucky enough to travel to places where they grow on the trees and when I was small, picking pomegranate seeds could make for a whole afternoon’s entertainment. My friend Cath once ruined her mum’s wall-paper by eating a pomegranate (with a pin) just a bit too close to the wall..!
I travelled in China in 1998 and often ate at the roadside cafes along the way. The tables were always patterned and bowls of hard boiled eggs were arranged on the table along with soy sauce and chopsticks. The eggs always looked so beautiful, in their different coloured bowls, I made many sketches and the image stuck with me… this piece was painted many years later, and was the start of several pieces with fruit and objects in beautiful bowls.

These sardines were a highlight on the menu during our Atlantic crossing.. I wanted to celebrate them and the lovely tins they came in. ( Also they tasted sensational!)

Rhubarb is divine and elegant, the wonderful fresh green leaves on perfect pink stems that show as spring first arrives. Not only pretty, but resilient, and delicious! The stems in my rhubarb paintings are created using collaged music scores. The sound of spring as the rhubarb pops into life!

Delicious displays in French Patisseries were the starting point for this series of three paintings. I bought a box of cakes and pastries and brought them back to my studio. Each piece was painted on an envelope, sent from France to England, like the cakes. The address can still be made out on the envelope, however the cakes mysteriously disappeared just after the paintings were finished…
