'The Love Heart’ Series

This series captures the passion and happiness a particular place can evoke. Inspired by amulets and milagros (ancient symbols of love and protection) the heart symbols reference local places, landmarks, discovered details and histories. The expressive brushstrokes are inspired by map references and symbols, as if taking a journey around the town and local area.

Fragments of music scores, architectural elements, patterns, historical information, recipes, ancient script and maps are often included to tell the story of a place. The love heart series illustrate the passion we all hold for places, travel, nature... the list is endless!

‘Love Fowey

This hand embellished piece captures the essence of Fowey in Cornwall.

Bold motifs in bright colours evoke the energy and passions that flow throughout thiis fabulous town. Key annual events are referenced through sketches of the small boats and streets seen during Regatta. There is also a sketch of The Phoenix, square rig boat, the Polruan Ferry, the Bodinnick car ferry and of course an RNLI lifeboat and The Harbourmaster‘s Office. Also spot the Fowey Gallants Sailing Club and the second world war mine, in aid of The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society.

Sketches of well known places include the Town Hall, Fowey Museum, The Old Lime Kilns, The Legion, Harbour House Hotel, Daphne Du Maurier’s House plus views of Whitehouse Quay, Polruan, Readymoney Cove and towards Place House. Doorways and signs for restaurants Fitzroys and Appletons and The Galleon as well as pubs including The King of Prussia, Haveners, The Lugger and The Lifeboat Cafe, Bufala and of course The Old Quay House Hotel.

Local innovative businesses illustrated include the wonderful ‘Leopard and Goat Farm’, Quay Bakery and Fowey Aquarium. Antique maps of the river Fowey show local villages and popular day trips: St Ives. St Austell, Veryan Bay, Polkerris and Mevagissey to name a few. Grey coloured hearts tell the history of the town with some delightful references from time past.

Flowers and herbs seen in summer, include Gorse, Echium, Lavender, Rosemary as well as the beautiful hanging baskets. The Old Grammar School Garden post box and the shrine from The Esplanade are there to be discovered. There is also a pair of blue wellies and pink wellies ( dog walking in the ain is a thing in Fowey!) plus bunch of very orange carrots, a nod to the excellent farms around Fowey. I had to mention ‘Kittows’ who provide the town with the very best pasties, fresh veg, shellfish, fresh fish ( .. the lobster and shoal of pilchards) and meats. Studies nod to pastimes rowing, walking and the microphone hints at live music events (see The Fowey Town Band plaque!)

Beverages include Colwith Farm vodka and of course... champagne in a bucket! Secret stories are hidden along with beach accessories: bucket and spade a seagull and St Piran’s flag (or two..) for good measure!
